In Elmina, most children are speaking Fante (not English) at home. So they arrive at Kindergarten with little knowledge of written words and English. But with a structured approach in small groups, we can prepare them for literacy and numeracy in English.
We are fortunate to have two volunteers with decades of experience as reading specialists. At their direction, we have a Resource Center with many books, games and learning materials.
We schedule children in Kindergarten and Grades 1&2 in groups of 12 max to come to our resource room for “Learning Through Play” as directed by our trained PIF students. We also do assessments that help provide individual attention as well as provide feedback to their teachers.
